The Golden Beauty of the Palomino Horse
|
Palomino known for its specific coat color and not for a particular breed of horse. This color posess a white mane and tails has a pretty gold coat. The coat color can range from light flaxen gold to a chocolate color. Cremello is another possibility which is a color that is almost white. Markings may be seen on the legs of the horse but cannot extend to the body. The eyes may be light in color at birth but will usually darken to brown over time. This color of coat is not to be confused with buckskin, which is the same light gold except with a dark mane and tail.
This horse is known as a color breed. This means there are various breeds that can be registered under this designation if they meet the requirements. Breeds of horses that may produce palomino foals include the Quarter Horse, Tennessee Walking Horse and American Saddlebred. While Thoroughbreds may show this coat color it is very rare. Some Arabian horses may show this type of coloring and be registered if such coloring is ideal to the standard, although this is also a rarity. Because of their distinctive coloring, these horses are prized in the show ring and as parade horses.
To breed this type of horse, you will need a stallion and mare with the appropriate coloring. Over a period of time, two palominos could be counted on to produce more palominos. Some of the foals may be cremello or chestnut as well. The gestation period for horses is around 11 months between breeding and birth. You will find that breeders producing foals for show want them to be born in January so they will have an edge against the competition in their age group. If you are interested in breeding this color of horse there is much to learn about horse genetics.
If you want to learn more about the Palomino horse, you will find plenty of resources on the Internet and in books. Here are a few titles devoted to this type of horse: Palominos by Victor Gentle, Palomino Horses by Tomas Micek and The Whole Horse Catalog which is a great all-purpose title devoted to many different breeds of equine. You may also want to join an organization like the Palomino Horse Breeders of America.
